Actually, since I was a child I wanted to do a job related to health.
That's what I said to my parents, I really wanted it, I don't know exactly how old I was, maybe I should have 6 or 7, but what I wanted was to take care of myself .... "
(Meeting with Benoît, Osteopath in Lyon, 40 years - 4 February 2011)
My name is Cristiana Bonelli, I am 23 years old and work in the Animal Osteopathy sector.
I work mainly in the equestrian world, treating horses of every discipline and age.
I am Pugliese, but working all over Italy (and also abroad), I am always traveling.
I discovered Osteopathy (in the equine environment) when my heart horse, Vadinia, suffered a serious injury.
I realized that, if she ever survived, she would have to have constant support in the rehabilitation process.
And so ... ... ECCOMI A SCUOLA!
I immersed myself in a new world, a world I could not immediately understand.
This is because Osteopathy is, for me, the Art of Trust.
And I was not used to "unconditionally believing" in something that cannot be seen or touched.
It took little to fall in love with this wonderful profession.
A few weeks ago, I received a message from the TVDM EQUESTRIAN Team in which I was asked to write about Equine Osteopathy on their BLOG.
I accepted this proposal with immense enthusiasm and from today we will begin a journey together where we will discuss various topics, from osteopathy to its use in the animal world.
So, from today, we will keep each other company and deepen all the nuances of Equine Osteopathy.
In this first article, we will try to "dust off" the concept and principles of osteopathy.
Osteopathy, in general, is a therapeutic approach that uses exclusively manual mobilization and manipulation techniques suitable for restoring mobility, and therefore functional harmony, of different body areas: musculoskeletal, visceral, myofascial, cranio-sacral.
The role of the osteopath is to identify the cause of suffering and remove it, to allow the body to implement its individual and autonomous path to health
What is Animal Osteopathy?
Animal Osteopathy is a branch of manual therapy based on the same practice and on the principles of Human Osteopathy, which evaluates the whole picture, rather than settling on the site of pain or dysfunction.
A unique aspect of working with animals is the need to excel in non-verbal communications and the ability to assess the external factors involved in presenting a case.
This means working closely with third parties, such as owners, veterinarians, trainers and behaviorists and, in the equine field, even with the farrier (or jogger) and the groom.
Clinically, the Expert in Animal Osteopathy uses the same range of techniques as human osteopaths, simply modifying them and adapting them to the animal, where necessary.
What does Animal Osteopathy treat?
IMPORTANT: The Expert in Animal Osteopathy ALWAYS works in collaboration with the Veterinarian, following the instructions!
The Expert in Animal Osteopathy treats a series of problems of the musculoskeletal, visceral, myofascial and alterations of the cranio-sacral system;
In particular, working with horses means becoming an integral part of the TEAM, especially for those who work with competition animals.
It is vital, for the general welfare of the animal, that all those involved work "hand in hand".
Consequently, it is a common practice to work on an equine case with the veterinarian, the farrier, the rider to ensure the best result for the patient.
The expert in Animal Osteopathy tends to treat musculoskeletal conditions, but with horses, pre / post-race treatments are common during the competition period.
Our meeting ends here, but I can't wait to tell you more about my world.
Stay tuned.
